5 Tips for Earning an Origami Owl Incentive Trip

You’re thinking, Maybe, just maybe, I can earn that. Wouldn’t that be awesome?  I’d love to be there. Then the doubt and negative self-talk start to sink in, Who am I trying to kid? I won’t be able to do it. I won’t have the time.  Its too hard.

Sound familiar?

Guess what! You CAN earn your Origami Owl incentive trip! It is absolutely possible. You just have to start! Here are five things you can do right now that will set you on the path to earning that vacation to that beautiful destination.

Believe you can do it.

The first thing you must do it BELIEVE. Believe you can achieve this goal. Tell yourself, “I can do this  and I am going to do this.” When any  negative thoughts or doubts start to work their way into your mind, change your thinking. Tell yourself, “I AM doing this. I am working to achieve this goal right now.” You have to believe in yourself.  Believe you can achieve it.

Commit and hold yourself accountable.

Put the goal in writing. Write it on a piece of paper and post it on a wall or mirror. Create a vision board or a vision Living Locket®. Post a picture of the location on social media with a caption that reads, “I am going on this Origami Owl incentive trip to ____________ next spring.”  You have to commit to your goal and be reminded of that commitment daily. The visual reminders will keep you focused and will help hold you accountable. Print this year’s incentive trip tracker and check off your accomplishments so you can track your progress and and be reminded of what you need to achieve.

You need to make sure that you have a clear understanding of what you need to do to qualify for the trip. Review the guidelines or FAQs about this year’s trip. The sooner you understand exactly what you need to accomplish, the sooner you can put a plan into place. If you have questions about a specific requirement, reach out to your mentors. They should be able to provide you with details about the requirements.

Make a plan and start working on it right now.

Too often we procrastinate and put things off. “I’ll start next month” or “I can’t do that right now, but I can try to do it later.” Guess what, when we push things off until “later,” they don’t get done. “Later” will come and go along with that trip! Put a plan together. Outline exactly what you need to do during the qualification period. Break down the requirements into smaller milestones so you can build momentum. For example, if you need to earn a certain amount of points by a certain date, figure out how many you need to earn at the halfway mark. Break that down further so you know what you need to do on a smaller scale.  Immediate and smalls wins will fuel your fire and keep your momentum going.

Focus on this goal everyday.

Seriously, ask yourself each day, What can I do today to help me move closer toward achieving this incentive trip? Then complete a task that moves you in the right direction.  Do this every single day.  Consistency and focus are absolutely key to achieving your Origami Owl® incentive trip.

Her Story: Anniversary Memories

So it’s my 2nd wedding anniversary today and my honeyman and I are going out to dinner to celebrate. I’m piecing together the perfect story that represents the memories of our wedding day and I’d like to share it with you because I’m really loving this locket. Today, “her story” is my anniversary story.


I always start with gold when I want to tell the story of our wedding day. Our wedding colors were nay blue and gold so gold jewelry is perfect for my anniversary locket.

I started with a Large Gold Twist Living Locket with Aurora Borealis Swarovski crystals. This locket face is a vintage piece that was part of our 2017 Easter Collection. Don’t worry, we have a similar look available nowunity ceremony

I knew I would include the anchor charm because it represents the Bible verse that inspired the theme of the wedding “Love anchors the soul. – Hebrews 6:19. We  got married at a marina so the anchor is a perfect representation of the venue.  The vintage “I do” charm represents our vows. The wedding ring charm looks like my engagement ring (I love it).

I had to include the lemon wedge charm because it represents out unity ceremony. Side note: We used a lemon tree for our unity ceremony and each poured soil from our childhood homes into the pot. When we purchased our first home, the tree was planted in the front yard of our first home.

The infinity symbol is my favorite charm because it symbolizes the date, 08-08, double infinity day. I included the bouquet charm because I loved my wedding flowers.  The gold “Family” charm was included because we were truly surrounded by family that day. Finally, the gold champagne flutes represent a toast to our future. Of course, I had to add more sparkle so I sprinkled in some Aurora Borealis Stardust Crystals.

This locket was the perfect look for our anniversary celebration. I loved wearing it to dinner and it made me smile to think about the memories from that day.

Establishing Origami Owl Team Culture

team cultureCongratulations, your Origami Owl team is growing!  You have undoubtedly worked very hard to attract and sponsor new Designers. Feel good about this and the impact you’ll have on their future! Also, understand that the inspiration of your Origami Owl® team starts with you. Its time for you to think about how you’ll shape the heart of your team and begin establishing your team culture.

Why? The true success of any team lies within the culture. It will keep everyone unified, committed, and strong. Let’s talk about what this means.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve participated in many different teams in my life: Girl Scouts, group projects, sports, corporate teams…the list goes on. Each had their own vibe, language, and values. These cultural components are what made everyone  feel like a TEAM and not individuals just “doing their own thing.”

As my Origami Owl  team grew, I knew I wanted my Designers to feel like they were part of something bigger. I also wanted to uphold certain values, especially those of the company.

Here are some tips I’ve learned that have helped develop Origami Owl® Team Culture:

Understand the Origami Owl® Mission Statement.

“Our mission is to be a Force For Good; to love, inspire, and motivate people of all ages to reach their dreams and empower them to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Our mission statement is powerful. As you begin to think about team culture, start with the mission statement and what specifically resonates with you. For example, if “reaching dreams” inspires you, consider how you can bring that to the center of your culture. This is an excellent starting point!

Action Step: Gain a true understanding of the mission statement. Break it down and think of ways  you’ve already interwoven this into your business. For more information or inspiration about the Origami Owl®  story, click here.

Gratitude is a very important part of my business. This translated well into developing the culture of my team. I shared my thoughts about what helped me succeed and my team rallied behind these practices. For example, my team values an “attitude of gratitude.” One of the ways gratitude has been woven into our culture is through the use of thank you cards. Everyone on the team knows how important it is to send thank you cards (calls and texts, too) to our customers. We are thankful for every order, Jewelry Bar, and opportunity to help someone create something special. Identifying gratitude as an important part of my business helped me establish what could also be important to my team.

Action Step: Think about what has helped you succeed in your business. How can this contribute to the culture of your team?

Recognize and celebrate the strengths of each Designer.

The beauty of your team is that it is made up of different personalities and individual strengths. Anyone can become an Origami Owl Independent Designer. Each person has their own “why.” Identify each Designer’s attributes. Do you have a Designer who excels at graphic design? She may be the key to designing your team logo. Is one Designer a great organizer? Perhaps she would like to coordinate your next team meeting. Utilize these strengths and be thankful for each Designer’s uniqueness. Recognizing these attributes will help solidify the culture.

Action Step: Think about each of your team members and what their strengths are. How can these strengths contribute to the team’s culture?

Live it, breathe it, and walk the talk. This is incredibly important when you are developing Origami Owl®  Team Culture.

All eyes are on you! You are the leader of the team and everyone is watching. They’re looking at you for guidance and inspiration. The most important part of developing Origami Owl® team culture is truly living and breathing it. This includes the way you treat your team members. If gratitude is an important part of your team, you better express thankfulness to your Designers. If you want personal relationships to be at the core of your culture, you best cultivate relationships with your Designers. As the leader, you must set the example.

Action Step: Write down items you feel will be part of your team culture. Start focusing on them each day as you work your business. Be clear and state what you truly value.

Maintaining a positive attitude is not only necessary when establishing team culture, but is also imperative to being a good leader and running a successful business. Don’t let the attitude of one Designer negatively affect the rest of the team. Look for positive solutions when conversations sour and do not feed into the negativity.  Also, understand that culture is a living and breathing entity. As you add more fabulous new Designers to your team, the culture will shift (a little) and that’s okay! Continue to look for the good in all situations and your team will do the same. Remember, you’re the one they’re looking at. Hold true to your values, stay focused, and your team culture will thrive!

Action Step: The next time you encounter a negative situation,  change the course of the conversation. Offer solutions, redirect, or identify the positive components. Practicing this behavior will help you as you encounter similar situations with your team.

Her Story: Origami Owl Birthday Wishes

her storyMy mom wanted to make a locket for her best friend’s birthday and truly capture her story in a special piece of Origami Owl® Jewelry. The two have been friends for over forty years. They met as young twenty-somethings at a bar while listening to their friend play in a band. They’ve stayed friends over the years and still talk on the phone to each other every night. They share a special connection and truly illustrate what best friendship looks like. Evynne has yet to create her story with an Origami Owl Living Locket® so my mom thought it would be special to make one for her.

Her Story

My mom selected a Medium Silver Hinged Living Locket® because Evynne does not like much “bling.” Then she began filling the locket with tiny charms that have meaning to Evynne. The gift started with a birthday cake charm and an August birthstone crystal by Swarovski®. These twp charms are perfect for commemorating birthday celebrations. Evynne is a divorced single mother so my mom included an October birthstone Swarovski crystal heart to represent her one and only daughter. birthday wishesThe two friends also love cookies and often share accounts of cookies they’ve recently experienced. My mom “had to have” the chocolate chip cookie charm in Evynne’s locket.  A special Star of David charm was included in the locket because the birthday girl is of the Jewish faith. In addition, my mom wanted a cat charm to represent Evynne’s beloved pet. Finally, we sprinkled some beautiful Aurora Borealis Stardust Crystals in the locket to add some extra “sparkle.” Everyone needs a little sparkle, right? The look was finished with a 24-26″ Silver Cube Chain (one of my favorites!). It was so perfect for Evynne!

My mom is so excited to give her this special locket.  She knows Evynne will absolutely love it! This locket isn’t just jewelry; this piece holds the stories of Evynne’s life and the friendship the two share. What a great way to capture birthday wishes!

6 Things You Can Do to have a Successful Origami Owl Vendor Event

Vendor events are incredibly beneficial for your Origami Owl business and you want to make sure that you take full advantage of these opportunities! Think about it: Why do we attend vendor events? To help new people tell their stories? Showcase new jewelry? Connect with new hostesses? Meet new Designers? Sure, but don’t leave the results up to fate! There are behaviors and business practices that you can (and should) do that will set you up for successful Origami Owl vendor event.

1. Prepare and practice the week before.

This is especially important if you have a new product display or have never participated in an event before. Pull out a table or mock up your jewelry display on the floor or kitchen counter. You’ll be able to see exactly how everything will look the day-of. You can make changes or additions to your set up during this practice run. You’ll also feel a bit more confident, organized, and mentally prepared. I like to take pictures of my mock-up and use them once I get onsite the day-of. Set-up is so much easier! I also suggest organizing other supplies needed at your event in advance so you’re prepared for anything that could arise.

2. Arrive early.

Show up as early as you possibly can to set up for the vendor event. This will allow you ample time to set up and get organized. There is nothing worse than arriving late and having to set up when customers arrive. You’ll be frazzled and stressed before the event starts. Arrive early, set up your beautiful booth or table, and be prepared to succeed.

3. Smile and say hello.

Smile and make eye contact with everyone that comes within visible range of you. More than likely, they’ll return the smile. First impressions only happen once so make sure the first impression people have of you is a good one. Verbally greet everyone that comes within five feet of you. This will feel approachable. Plus, people generally want to engage with others who are friendly and nice. When appropriate, introduce yourself along with our Origami Owl brand. Be genuine and authentic.

4. Stay out in front.

This was the biggest lesson I’ve learned from participating in vendor events: Always stand out in front of your display tables.  You will appear inviting and friendly. Do not sit in a chair behind the table. This is not a swap meet or a garage sale. Stand with confidence in front of your display and be ready to talk to people as they approach. Of course, don’t be creepy or aggressive and scare them off. Stand in your booth and stay engaged with your beautiful jewelry. You can organize, straighten, or clean pieces of your display. Do not hide behind the table. Don’t text or talk on your phone. Do not eat while potential customers are coming through. You are there to interact and engage with your shoppers. Be ready for them.

5. Visit other vendors, but remember this is not your social event.

Networking is a huge part of a successful vendor event. You should work with your fellow vendors, not against them. Greet everyone with a smile and a hello (see #1) and introduce yourself, especially to your neighbors. Speaking of neighbors, keep your products and display within your designated area and do not encroach upon your neighbor’s space. Be kind and friendly. Other vendors may be well-connect and are often your greatest source for information about upcoming events. Of course, fellow vendors may stop by to chat about what you’re offering. Do not spend too much time socializing as you don’t want to miss an interaction with a customer, but also remember that your fellow vendors might be shoppers, too. Some may even be looking for a career opportunity. You never know. Be open, honest, and willing to help anyone that takes the time to stop by.

6. It’s not over until its over (and your space is clean).

If you’ve committed to an event, stay until it has ended. Do not pack up early. Even if sales are slow, you have committed to the event and you need to uphold you’re end of the deal. Also, you never know who might stop by at the very end. Some of the biggest purchases often come from the last customers to move through the event (or fellow vendors before closing time). Also, ALWAYS leave your event space cleaner than you found it. This suggestion comes from my childhood experience as a Girl Scout. Pick up all trash and debris from the ground. Intentionally leave the space better than when you arrived. You are a guest and it is the polite thing to do. Plus, if you want to be invited back to the event in the future, staying until the end and cleaning up after yourself are two ways to end on a positive note with the event coordinator.

Five Reasons to Choose Direct Sales

“You’re getting involved with a pyramid scheme?” The dreaded question that is asked time and time again when someone contemplates joining the Direct Sales industry.

Gulp. “Yes, yes I am. I am joining a pyramid.” That was the best I could do.  I wasn’t prepared to answer this question and had no idea what to say or what to do. It was embarrassing and I was ashamed. What am I doing? People aren’t going to shop from me much less book a party with ‘my pyramid.’  These thoughts that consumed me during my first few months as an Origami Owl Independent Designer.

But guess what? I can confidently respond to this question now and can tell you why I would choose direct sales over anything else on any day of the week. I believe in this industry and I’m here to tell you why YOU need to choose direct sales.

But first, a little background….

I came from a full-time, 9am-5pm job. Actually, that’s a total lie. I was working from 6:00 am until my last meeting was over for the day. My boss had this wonderful process of scheduling meetings as close to my last hour as possible. Rarely was I able to leave by 3:00 pm. Oh, and I was commuting 75 my each way, Monday through Friday. Anyone from Southern California would understand that you don’t want to be anywhere near the 405 freeway at 4:05 pm.  I had no life and felt robotic. It was unhealthy and miserable and I was very, very tired. I dreamed of the day I could work from home and spend time doing what I love, leading my direct sales team.

So here I am, telling you why you, too, should choose direct sales. You ready for this?

1. Every company is built like a pyramid.

Let’s knock this one out first. In my opinion, no matter where you work or what you do (unless you’re self-employed), you work for some one. They make money off of you and your work. And guess what? They work for someone, too. Their superior takes some sort of gain from them. The “pyramid” continues to grow until you reach the CEO or owner or investment firm. There is always someone above capitalizing off of someone below. With my direct sales company, everyone must work if they’d like to reap the rewards. My mentors must work their business in order to make any financial gain or reward from me.  They can’t inactively collect earnings, promotions, or incentives. Think about that. Also, before you join your direct sales company, review the career plan with your potential mentor and ask how each level is achieved.

2. You control your own income with direct sales.

Yes, you heard me. You control how much money you make. This may sound shocking, but it is entirely true. No one can cap how much money you make with direct sales. Read that again: no one can cap how much you make with direct sales. The sky is the limit! Do you want some extra spending money? Great! Do you want to pay your mortgage? Perfect! With some training, dedication, perseverance, and consistency, you can achieve your financial goals. It will take work, but you can get there.

3. You make your own hours.

Yes, you read that right. You work when you want to work. For example, I am a night owl and especially enjoy the luxury of working until 2:00 am. My brain functions really well around midnight and I’m able to get a lot done. For early birds, direct sales also caters to you. You can literally schedule your own business hours. Of course, you can’t call customers at all hours of the day and you can’t host an event at midnight, but you have the ability to arrange your time to accomplish your goals and tasks.  Also, you need to stay focused, inspired, and organized during the hours dedicated to your direct sales business. Period. If you don’t have working hours, you will not make money (see paragraph above).

4. Opportunity is around every corner.

Birthday parties, play dates, working from your local coffee shop, going on lunch dates with friends, and all other social events serve as opportunities to market your direct sales business.  Heck, even a trip to the grocery stores could result in a new lead. Every interaction you engage in gives the unique opportunity to grow your business, connect with new customers, or welcome new teammates. You just need to keep this at the forefront of your mind.  Any time you have the ability to interact with another human is an opportunity to advertise. 5. Direct Sales is fun!

It is a lot of fun. If you’re passionate about the product, you’re going to enjoy sharing it. You’re also going to meet a lot of great people that share a similar passion. You’ll have the opportunity to attend meetings, conventions, and incentive trips with people from all over the world. I still think about one of my direct sales besties and how we met at our first convention. She is from Louisiana and I’m from California. We talk year-round and stay in touch, but would have never met if it wasn’t for our direct sales company. Oh and those meetings, conventions, and trips are all part of the fun! Experiencing new places, trying new foods, participating in activities, and seeing new sites is all part of the experience. Direct Sales Vendor Event Supplies

A list of everything you’ll need!

You signed up for a vendor event with your direct sales business – yay! This is wonderful and such a great opportunity. You’re ready to pack up your beautiful product and get your show on the road, but wait! There are some things you need to take with you to make your experience as a vendor run as smooth as possible. This will also make the experience more fun and successful. The list below contains my top supplies for direct sales vendor events. Here’s everything I like to bring with me:


This sounds obvious, but I have to include it right? Bring your latest and greatest.  Bring the newest, most fresh and beautiful product you have on-hand. You want it to sparkle and shine from your vendor booth. Showcase your goods so your customers can look at, touch, and try on everything! In addition, bring anything you might need to clean or polish your pieces, just in case. You want everything to look PERFECT! You may also consider bringing extra inventory to restock with.

Business Supplies

Set yourself up for smooth and successful purchases. Bring the items that you need for conducting a transaction at your booth. This may include:

  • Order forms: stamped, labeled, and prepped in advance
  • Clipboard (or another solid writing surface)
  • Pens
  • Calculator for totaling – This looks so much more professional than your phone.
  • Point of Sale Product – If you’re not using pen and paper to process transactions, be sure to bring your product for processing your sales (If WIFI is needed, be sure you inquire about this or establish your plan before the event)
  • Business cards
  • Current catalogs: labeled and ready
  • Cash and coin for making change: If you ware accepting cash payments, bring small bills (lots of $1 bills) and coins for making change. Be sure to keep this money secured and out of sight.
  • Shopping bags and to-go packaging: This is important if you are performing cash ‘n’ carry transactions. Bonus: Use bags that stand out and showcase your brand. This will draw attention to your customers as they walk around with their beautiful purchases.
  • Small “business table”: I always bring a small card table or TV tray to events to go behind my display tables. This provides me with a small space to keep my paperwork, order forms, calculator, etc.
  • Tablecloths: Clean, pressed and branded tablecloths for your tabletops. You may also want an extra tablecloth for your small business table.

Shopping Experience Enhancers

What can you add to your booth or table to make it stand out just a little bit more or to attract shoppers? How can you make the shopping experience that much better or easier? Consider the following:

  • Mirrors: a necessity if you sell jewelry (like me!) or clothing.
  • Bed Lifts: Yes! You read that right   B E D   L I F T S.  Bed lifts can be placed under the feet of your table and will bring your product closer to eye level. This is so important when you have small product on your table that shoppers have to bend down to see. Lifts will make the shopping experience so much easier as shoppers won’t break their backs leaning over to see your small products.
  • Magnifying Glass: Again, something for customers to use to make it easier to see small pieces on your table.
  • Seasonal Decor: Fresh flowers or holiday decorations are great for freshening up your display and making it standout and “pop” against the others around you.
  • Raffle Tickets/Entry Forms and a Container: If your brand permits it, consider a bowl or jar for raffle drawings. Collect customer information and add their name to the container to win a prize. These contact forms are priceless as they allow you to follow up with all that entered.

Back-up or “Just in Case” Materials

I bring a ziplock bag that contains items that I “might” need. I call this my “Emergency Toolbox.” I may not need everything at every event, but it is always a good idea to have them on-hand, just in case:

  • Sharpies or thick markers
  • Extra Pens
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Scotch tape
  • Fishing line (this might sound so weird, but it seriously can work wonders)
  • Notepad
  • Small pliers

Some items may or may not be provided by your actual vendor event. Read your contract carefully and understand what you are responsible for providing. Also, some items may require permission. Be sure to check with your event coordinator to understand your limitations and requirements. You may need or want to bring:

  • Table(s): Some events provide them and some do not. You’ll want to confirm this in advance
  • Pop-up tent, canopy, E-Z up to protect against weather: this may be part of your regular outdoor set and may or may not be permitted by your event.
  • Chairs: For you or your assistant to take a break in (though I do not recommend sitting down during the event)
  • Lights/lighting: Some product requires extra lighting to ensure visibility.
  • Generator or power source
  • Extension cords

The more organized and prepared you are for your event, the more success you’ll have! Get your supplies together and be prepared to succeed.

Here are my thoughts:

Vendor events provide exposure.

The most minimal benefit of participating in vendor events is that people will see you and they will see your product. Think about it, you’re putting yourself in front of a new audience. People will attend the event and walk by your setup.   This could be their first introduction to you and your product. You have the unique ability to create a first impression and “plant the seed” about your product. They may ask for a catalog, business card, or more information. New relationships form at vendor events.

There are two types of people that you will meet at vendor events, shoppers and fellow vendors. Let’s talk about the shoppers first. The shoppers have obviously come to shop and want to know what you’ve got to offer to them.  Ask questions, learn their name, and get to know them as best as possible. Most importantly, listen to them. Listen to what they might be looking for. This unique, window of opportunity is only provided at events.  You also have the ability to interact with and form relationships with fellow vendors. This is critical to your direct sales business because it allows you to network. Keep in mind that the relationships you form with other vendor can be incredibly beneficial to your direct sales business.  Fellow vendors also tend to shop with you. They may also be able to refer you to future events. They may also know someone who is looking for your product.
